April Fools Champion Market Goat sale: There have been three of these annual market goat sales. Top breeders from all over Oregon and Washington bring their quality wethers to the sale. Over 80 animals were entered into the sale in each of the last two years. Wethers are divided into groups by age, and the order that children pick is determined by random lottery. Many of the champion and reserve champion animals at fairs across Washington and Oregon came from the sale! We are currently taking reports from buyers and breeders of the 2008 Fair Results; go to our Results page and then click on the 2007 and 2008 county fair results pages to see the quality sold at the sale. Make plans now for your 4-H or FFA child to buy their 2009 champion market goat on April 5th at the Skamania Fairgrounds in Stevenson, WA. The CBGA does not charge any fees to breeders or buyers for this sale; we believe that it fullfills our group's mission to donate the venue and staffing for the sale which provides top quality animals to dedicated 4-H and FFA children who work hard at their projects and deserve a quality animal to have the best chance possible at a successful project.

Note: 100% of any profits from the April Fools Boer Goat Weekend go to the CBGA for use in funding our other programs across the year.

ABGA Judges-Training Scholarship

In fall of 2007, the CBGA voted to begin a scholarship program to help offset the costs associated with attending judges training. One scholarship will be available for the early 2008 training. Candidates will need to be residents of Oregon or Washington, and submit a complete application (application will be available on the website or through contacting committee chair Allan Luethe). In some cases, candidates may be asked to judge sample classes at a member farm as part of the selection process.

UPDATE: Our plan was to offer a scholarship through the club for ABGA Judges training. The problem is there is no training scheduled. I have been in contact with the office there and it doesn't appear that any will take place anytime soon. Our committee is basically on hold until we get a commitment from the ABGA office.

Red, White & Boer Wether & Youth Show

In summer 2007, the CBGA hosted the second day of the Red, White & Boer Show. In addition to an open USBGA show, there was a youth showmanship competition that featured nearly 70 participants! Classes were divided into five age groups, and we saw some of the finest showmanship ever seen in the Northwest! Then two wether divisions were held. An April Fools division for those wethers purchased at the Cascade Boer Goat Association's April Fools Market Goat Sale, and then an open wether division open to all comers. An April Fools wether, bred by Just Kidding Farm, was the grand champion of both wether divisions. Over $1,100 in cash prizes were awarded to the wether show participants.

In 2008, the CBGA will again host the Cascade Boer Goat Association's April Fools and open wether divisions. Additionally, there will be a Bred-by-Exhibitor division. The child must have owned the doe at the time of the breeding in order to show the offspring in the Bred-by-Exhibitor division, and must have cared for the market goat continuously since its birth. The child is not required to own the sire of the wether, however.

Market Goat Support at County Fairs

In summer 2006, the CBGA began its program to support the kids completing 4-H and FFA market goat projects by adding on money to one animal from each of four counties. The criteria used was slightly different per county due to different rules and ways the sales are run in each county. In each case, the criteria for winning the $100 add-on from the CBGA was set prior to the final weigh in and conformation judging.
